There are 572 islands in the territory, of which only approximately 38 are permanently inhabited. The smaller Nicobar’s comprise some 22 main islands (10 inhabited). The Andaman’s and Nicobar’s are separated by a channel (the Ten Degree Channel) some 150 km wide.

Indira Point is situated on the island of Great Nicobar in the Nicobar Islands, eastern Indian Ocean, and it represents the southernmost point of land in the territory of India. It was formerly known by various names, including Pygmalion Point, Parsons Point and, for a brief period of time, India Point.

Port Blair is the largest town and a municipal council in Andaman district in the Andaman Islands and the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India. It lies on the east coast of South Andaman Island and is the main entry point to the islands.

Although Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of the mainland of the Indian subcontinent itself, Indira Point was the furthest south on Indian soil until the tsunami generated by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake inundated much of its area, partly submerging the lighthouse. However, geologists have stated that the sea is slowly starting to retreat back to its original position.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are a veritable Garden of Eden and a naturalist's heaven. The clean environment, roads, greenery as well as unpolluted fresh air attract all nature lovers. The tropical rain forests and waters of Bay of Bengal are the home of a vast collection of plant, animal and marine life.
